Paper And Card Food Packaging Without Plastic

Liquid Glass Shield – Bioshield Coating Solutions (BCS) is a leading innovator in nano barrier coatings for paper, card and pressed plant materials which focus on the protection of materials used in the food packaging industry.  For many years plastics have been used to store, transport and present various types of food and liquids but due to both economic (higher taxation) and environmental pressures almost all large scale food manufacturing companies are looking for an alternative to single use plastics.

In almost all cases single use plastics are not recycled and eventually find their way to landfill or worse, the worlds oceans.  It can take many hundreds even thousands of years for some plastics to degrade so it’s essential that alternatives to plastics are explored.  Paper and card packaging has the enormous benefit that it can be recycled and is also compostable which means if it enters landfill the product fully decomposes in several weeks.  The principle challenge of card and paper products is they are porous and when wet quickly lose their mechanical structure which makes uncoated paper and card unsuitable for liquids and foods that have a large moisture content.  Traditionally a plastic laminate has been applied to the internal surface of the cup or container to stop the moisture entering the structure of the paper/card which is still a single use plastic.

So what are the options, the engineers and designers at BCS have developed non-plastic surface coatings that can easily be applied to paper and card.  These coatings are designed to block liquids passing into the food/liquid container.  They have the performance of a plastic laminate without the downside, the coatings are fully compostable and also have the ability to be separated from the original card or paper which simply means the container can be recycled.

BCS coatings have multiple coatings for use in food and beverage manufacturing including hot and cold beverage cups, ready-meal trays, fast-food boxes, fresh meat and fish trays and even drinking straws.  Coatings are designed for ultra-low storage temperatures and high temperatures produced in oven and microwave cooking without loss of performance.

All BCS coatings are fully compliant with International food safety protocols and exceed the EU overall migration limit (EN1186:1, EN1186:5, EN1186- Part 13 Method B, SAM- CHEM- 39 & SAM- CHEM- 35).

BCS coatings are water based so can be applied in almost all manufacturing environments, the protective coatings can be applied to paper (rolls and sheets), cardboard (sheets, rolls and 3D packaging), composite boards (all normally flat structures):  Soft-board, Hard-Board, MDF, particle board & Ply-board.  Application can be by spray, roller, curtain coating and Flexo/Gravure print.

The application team at BCS are able to advise and design implementation of coatings for almost all packaging and storage types.  If you would like to know more about the next generation of protective nano coatings please contact the team.  For US/Canada enquiries please contact Steven Zeitz: +1 (514) 804 6180
